For those of you who like ‘the rest of the story’ it is one we love to tell:

In 2007 Liz Enslow was graduating from college in Alaska, where she grew up.  While celebrating at a local contemporary ceramic studio she and her mother Karen looked at the smiling faces around the table.  There was a 70 year old, a 3 year old, many twenty and thirty somethings.  Everyone was having a great time and then it clicked.  This would be a fun business.  

Approximately one year later, Karen and Liz decided to open a studio in Billings Montana and it was one of those decisions they have never regretted.  Being at the studio has been heartwarming- watching people celebrate birthdays, rewarding- seeing people’s reactions when they pick up their projects and challenging- trying to get just one more item in an already full kiln. 

Liz is on site 90% of the time and prides herself in helping people to create the project simply- with sponges or bubbles, or in a more artistic and time consuming style.  With approximately 1500 contemporary ceramic studios in the country you will find many differences, and many similarities.  In Good Glazes does not charge a studio fee, they do not serve food and they do not rush you through the process.  What they will do is fully explain the process, giving advice as needed, reward your loyalty with a frequent fire card and provide upbeat coaches to make sure the time you spend in the studio is rewarding.  

When asked to describe the typical client it is hard to identify.  Men often drag their feet when coming in the door, but quickly grab a brush and set to work.  Young children make hand prints and much loved toddler art.  Families arrive with every generation in tow.  One family frequently paints with a 97 year old grandmother.  When she is painting she tells stories of her childhood.  Another mom drives in from Circle twice a month with her teenage daughters.  She says sitting around the table at In Good Glazes is the only place her daughters will talk with her openly.  While the typical client is hard to identify, the ideal client is not.  

The ideal In Good Glazes client arrives with a spirit of adventure, ready to try something new.  They often bring friends or family along and they are happy to listen to the coaches yet knowing they can do their own things…and if their first project is not stellar (it will be!) they learned something and will try again next time.  Many ideal clients come to the studio several times a month and they praise the work of others which helps to create the warm atmosphere Liz is so excited to offer.
